Sauer Kraut and Kraut Salat

by Web6 on October 16, 2010

Okay, the names already sound confusing. Those are German foods. Both are very sour and made from white cabbage.

I have a funny story about this. Some days ago, hubby bought cabbages and plan to make a Kraut Salat (white cabbage salad).

Like usual, i always browse on the Internet looking for recipes if it comes with German food which i don’t cook often. I found one, which was “Sauer Kraut”.

Sauer Kraut is totally different than Kraut Salat, Sauer Kraut is made from cabbage, apple, onion, vinegar all cooked for about 45 minutes.

While i was cooking, i still thought that i was making a Kraut Salat :(

So i forgot that Kraut Salat is a usual salad, but made from white cabbage. It is made with a more simple way than Kraut Salat.

People like to buy Sauer Kraut in a jar sometimes, i just don’t like them. My self made Sauer Kraut was good though, the longer it is kept, the taste gets better.

German words are almost similar to each other, and sometimes it is confusing, eventhough i have been living here for 6 years, and speaking German in a daily life.

Dina,

That is very interesting story, I did not know in German there is similar sounding names. So did you finally make the salad and was it good? I am always experimenting with food too, poor Zenguy has to taste all my experiments.

Hey Zengirl :D

Yes, it was good, but as usual my boy (8 yo) does not like salad stuff, so me and hubby ate them =) It did taste really good, you should also try it ahaha.

It is a famous German dish. I am not sure if your Zenguy would like it, but hey, if we would never try, we would never know.

Thank you so much for visiting and leaving a comment :D
